Plan terms

How a plan works, from the goal to the performance fee.

This page describes how we actually work, and it is accurate. The formal wording of these terms is with our advisers and will replace it shortly. If you need the definitive wording before then, please ask us and we will send it.

Assessment lessons and the plan session

  • It starts with assessment lessons, where your tutor gets to know your child's abilities and how they can help.
  • Assessment lessons are pay-as-you-go: 20% of the price, paid when you book.
  • Then your tutor meets you for a plan session, sets out the outcome they'll deliver, and sends the plan for you to agree in writing.
  • If you stop before agreeing a plan, you owe nothing more.

The plan and its milestones

  • A plan has an outcome, the goal, and is worked through in milestones: short-term targets towards it, each with a target date.
  • A milestone lasts up to 10 weeks: lessons, then a test lesson on what it covered. There's one at a time, and the next follows until the goal is reached.
  • You agree the plan, and each milestone, in writing, or ask for changes. Agreeing is your decision to continue.
  • If an agreed goal or milestone changes, you're sent a new version, and agree to it again.
  • When the goal is reached, the plan ends. You can start a new one if you'd like.

What you pay

  • Pay-as-you-go: 20% of each lesson's price, charged with the lesson.
  • The performance fee: 80% of the price of the milestone's lessons, invoiced once when it ends, depending on the outcome.
  • Lessons taught before a milestone is agreed, or between milestones, go onto the next milestone. No lesson is billed twice.
  • Our pricing covers one lesson a week for each subject, Monday to Sunday. A second lesson in the same week with the same tutor can't be booked.
  • There's no booking fee, service charge or card fee.

The outcome

  • We record each milestone's outcome from the agreed check. Your tutor doesn't.
  • Target met: the whole performance fee.
  • Improved, target missed: 40% of it with Early Career and Experienced teachers, and nothing with a Super Teacher.
  • No improvement: nothing.
  • You see the outcome and the amount on your page, and Stripe emails you the invoice. It's due within 7 days.

The baseline and the test

  • Each milestone records the baseline, where your child starts and the evidence for it, and what counts as improved short of the target.
  • Each milestone ends with a test lesson: your child sits a timed test on our platform, covering the areas studied, so the result is fair. It's set and marked by your child's school teacher, or by your tutor if you're happy with that. It's sat by the target date, or by a new date we agree up to 14 days later. If it isn't sat, that counts as a missed commitment.

Attendance

  • Your child attends at least 90% of scheduled lessons. Lessons we cancel, lessons you reschedule with at least 24 hours' notice, and absences due to illness don't count as missed.

Changes and pauses

  • If an agreed milestone changes, you're sent a new version to agree.
  • If we cancel lessons or your tutor can't continue, we move the target date back or find you another teacher, and the fee only ever covers lessons taught. For an illness or emergency lasting more than 7 days, either side can ask to pause: the target date moves with a new version for you to agree.

Changing tutor

  • If you're unhappy with your tutor, you can ask to change at any time. The plan carries on with your new tutor, with the same target, baseline and test. Lessons already taught keep their price, lessons with your new tutor are at theirs, and the performance fee is worked out lesson by lesson. Changing tutor isn't ending early.

Ending early and cancelling

  • If you end a milestone early, or decide not to continue, the full performance fee is due on the lessons already taught, whatever the reason, unless we didn't keep our side of the guarantee.
  • You can cancel a milestone within 14 days of agreeing it. You pay the full price of the lessons already taught (pay-as-you-go and performance fee), and nothing for lessons not yet taught.

If you disagree with the outcome

  • If you disagree with the outcome, tell us within 7 days. We review the evidence, with an independent teacher if needed, and if the outcome changes we cancel or reissue the invoice.
  • The next milestone starts once the last performance fee is paid.

Your teacher's pay

  • We pay your teacher in full for every lesson, whatever the result. The outcome changes what you pay, not what your teacher earns.
